Video is cool, but copy is king…

April 5th, 2009 Posted in copywriting, marketing

One of the biggest mistakes I see marketers make these days – and I’m talking about both newbies and experts – is relying on video to close the sale.

Not that video is bad thing. A good presentation can persuade prospects they are making a smart decision by demonstrating positive end results and showing ease of use.

And of course video testimonials are extremely powerful, more so than written ones since they seem real and believable to many people.

But there are a few problems…

1) Not every prospect responds well to video. Some folks actually prefer reading a sales message so they can see in “black and white” what they are buying.

2) Online video is great, but let’s face it, a number of people don’t have the bandwidth for it. Using only video means if a prospect’s connection is running slow or they didn’t upload the latest version of Flash, they can’t buy your stuff (and that sucks).

3) And the biggest one of all… Not everyone is cut out to be on camera. Most of the sales videos I see suck, and I often find myself pining for an old-fashioned salesletter so I can skip the hyperbole and fast forward to the guarantee, bonus, and offer.

That’s why I would never launch a product (or let a client launch a product) without a solid sales letter in place.  Even the big guru dudes still use them. In fact, nearly every recent “successful” launch for a big ticket course used a killer sales letter as part of the process.

So how do you create a killer sales letter? Simple, you use the amazing system created by the baddest copywriter I know, the illustrious John Carlton.

Carlton’s giving the best stuff away on his blog right now, including a number of revealing conversations with top marketers about how they write copy and make more cash online. It’s all part of his Simple Writing System launch, which is coming in the next 24 hours.

This is pretty cool stuff, especially if you are looking for a way to start writing powerful ad copy on your own. Go here now and remember this URL…
