Three things you (probably) didn’t know about Twitter

March 19th, 2009 Posted in Uncategorized

No doubt you’ve heard of  – and probably even joined – the social networking site Twitter.com.

It’s a huge viral phenomenon that’s quite literally growing like a weed since it’s so easy to engage with customers, prospects, companies, celebrities, and friends you are interested in. Unlike Facebook or Myspace, there’s no need to “approve” those you interact with. If people like you and what you “tweet” (post), they follow you. If not, they unfollow you. It’s 100% up to them.

Twitter is described as a micro-blog; posts are limited to 140 characters, which encourages brevity and succinctness. And because it’s easy and fun to tweet from your phone, Twitter is also being called the “immediate” Internet since people tend to give updates of what they are doing in the moment, whether it’s interesting or not;)

If it seems complicated, it’s not. I got the hang of it pretty quick, and even John Carlton and Marlon Sanders figured it out, and those guys are as old as Moses! There are a ton of tutorials and explanations all over the Web and the Twitter site about how the whole thing works.

Overall, it’s a fascinating – and simple – system that’s getting a ton of media attention right now, and like I said, growing very, very rapidly (millions of new users every month).

So what’s all this have to do with direct-marketing on the Internet and the Mizel Method in particular? Plenty…

There are a few things you may not yet realize about Twitter that can have a significant impact on you and your business:

1) Traffic: You can post links to URLs you own (like product sites), or that you recommend (like affiliate links) and drive a significant amount of qualified traffic where you want very quickly. Twitter is a fantastic way to promote blog posts, sales letters, and squeeze pages, which makes it great for…

2) List Building: Because it’s so easy to follow people, your prospects can get a “taste” of what you are like before they commit to giving you their email address. That makes Twitter a powerful tool to build your list for either an ezine, or a special offer like a launch or niche product roll-out.

3) Conversions: In a number of scientific tests with partners and associates, Twitter traffic actually converted better than visitors from an email, most likely because followers tend to be more rabid than subscribers. Your mileage may vary, but all indications point to this being a solid marketing tool.

Because the Mizel Method is all about getting traffic, building a list, and making more sales, this is an important service to be aware of, and actually use in your business.

So here’s what I want you to to do right now

** Get over to Twitter and sign up with your name, company name, or the generic description of what you do (example: SkinDoctor, MarketingConsultant, DogExpert, etc.). It’s free, and even if you aren’t going to participate right away, you’ll want to lock in a good name.

** Search for people you know at http://search.twitter.com and follow them, as well as look at who they are following to build a list you are personally interested in. It’s likely a large number of your followees will follow you back.

** Start posting and participating in the community and providing value to your followers. Remember, you are limited to 140 characters, so it won’t take you more than a few minutes to get going, plus it’s fun.

** Follow me at http://twitter.com/JonathanMizel for details on what I’m up to, and special “pre-release” info. (For example, my Twitter followers get blog posts before my opt-in subscribers.

And in case you were wondering, the average age of Twitter users is 31, so this isn’t just something the “kids” are doing, it’s a serious business tool. Get started now, you’ll thank me later.

Respectfully Submitted,

Jonathan Mizel

Are there any good tutorials or ebooks on marketing with Twitter? I’m having a bit of trouble figuring out the bizarre nomenclature everyone uses, as well as how to make links show up when posting.

Apparently in the UK 60% of Twitter users are over 35. So yes, not just for “the kids”. :)
