Sneaky affiliate marketing trick
August 8th, 2009 Posted in Affiliate Marketing, Domains, New TechniquesJust got the Flip set up in my new office and decided to make a little video about how to mix domain name strategies with affiliate marketing to…
- Generate more traffic
- Track more effectively
- Create a business asset
- Protect affiliate income
- Create a “superbrand”
I didn’t actually invent this method, the credit goes to some sneaky “underground” dudes I met a few years ago at a marketing conference.
I’m pretty sure you’ll find this useful, especially if you sell other people’s products;)
Jonathan
PS: If you like this video, feel free to make a comment or ask a question and I’ll try to respond.
PPS: Excuse the funny black hat, I was having some “issues” that day…

Jonathan,
great information as usual from you. I have been following you for years and you have always a very ingenious and yet simple point of view.
One thing I don’t understand:
If you use the http://www.domain.com in your email (or other promotion channels) which redirects to a
http://www.merchantdomain.com/affiliateurl.htm?tracking
you can actually track just ONE tracking. That’s ok if you use just one traffic source, but how about the others? A (partial solution) would be a redirect like:
http://www.domain.com/tracking1
http://www.domain.com/tracking2
http://www.domain.com/tracking3
but it defies the simplicity of using just the plain domain, doesn’t it? Another solution would be to buy different domains for different tracking sources like:
http://www.domaintracking1.com
http://www.domaintracking2.com
or
http://www.domain-tracking1.com
but it messes up the superbrand domain that one chose. What are you doing in reality to keep this simple and great strategy working while keeping different tracking IDs working?
And about email: you said you use only HTML email. What if someone filters it or doesn’t see it and needs the plain text email? (that about 100% of internet marketers use for that matter) And aren’t you using the Aweber or Getresponse internal tracking to see clicks? (that makes sense if you track them elsewhere).
Thank you in advance if you will reply and thank you for this great video (going to read other posts in this blog, this Sunday morning).
Marco
FROM JM: Thanks for the question Marco, When I mail, I almost always use the html mailing option built into AWeber and I use their click tracking. That way I can display the domain I’m branding but actually drive the traffic into a sub ID or different affiliate link (plus I can track open rate and test subject lines). For the text version, I don’t mask the affiliate link since the traffic is usually only 3 – 5% of the html version, and I really don’t worry about it. For example, I just did a promo for Mike Hill that looked like this…
————————,
Heads up
This guy has generated billions of visitors and
tens of millions of dollars online, and now he’s
created a formula nearly anyone can use.
I have to admit this is pretty high-level stuff,
but something tells me you can handle it…

Sincerely,
Jonathan Mizel
PS: If the link is broken, just type or
paste this into your address bar:
InternetMediaGuru.com
————————
Run your mouse over the links and you’ll see the destination is different from the display URL. When I use a text only message, it’s usually after I’ve done a bit of testing and I don’t feel the need to track every single list segment since I know an offer/promo/campaign already works. BTW, that’s what I’ve done with Carlton’s offers in the past and it’s paid off in terms of extra traffic to TopWebCopy.com.
On Banners and PPC ads, I include the domain within the graphics, as well as use it as the display URL on networks that allow it (not Google). You’d be surprised how many people will type in an address that’s been heavily advertised.

Jonathan,
Great video! Simplistic, and I own a few domains that just sit there and do nothing. Thanks for the info, take care!

Hi Jonathan,
That was a great video. The idea is superb and its a great way to brand your own business regardless of what affiliate program you are promoting.
I use split testing myself with scripts that test various products with one lin, but the idea of actually getting the domains and basically hi-jacking a main brand is brilliant.
Many thanks again

Thanks Jonathan,
I enjoyed looking at your video above. I like the simplicity of your delivery of these concepts. This, to me, is a prime example of good coaching because it offers alternatives and an opportunity expand on these ideas.

Great video Jon! Thanks!
We gotta start using this method again. It used to work for us in the past pretty well. Adding your new tricks will do wonders, I think. Thanks once again.

Hi Jonathan,
thanks, I have used a similar strategy, but I am curious: what do you do to constantly drive traffic to these sites? Specially since you don’t put any real content on there to feed the search engines.
Video? Squidoo, etc? Articlemarketing? Paid traffic? Thanks a lot!
From JM:
Almost all my traffic comes from my own list of 850K, paid media (Email list rental, Banners, PPC ads, Contextual) and type in traffic that the keyword domains already gets. I’m sure if you build blogs or posted content on these domains, they’d get a nice search engine bump, but that sounds like work to me;)

Just a couple things I would like to add in.
It is always best to keep Trademarked Terms out of your domain name. Example, MakeMoneyWithGoogle.com. This infringes in Google’s trademark. Could Google come after you, yes and they often do. The same with other brands like eBay etc.
Secondly, not ALL affiliate programs allow for domain name forwarding (301 redirection). Many consider it cookie stuffing. Be sure to read TOS for affiliate programs or your traffic/clicks just may be a waste.
From JM:
Thanks Jamie, great points. I agree the Google domain is risky, and today I would not register a name like that (it was done back when GoogleCash.com was just getting big and Google didn’t seem to care). I want to stress that I never recommend people get any sort of trademarked name, the idea is to create a new brand, not capitalize on someone’s existing brand. I usually focus on the “generic” keywords instead (for example, MakeMoneyWithPPC.com, SocialMediaSecrets.com, PrivateMembershipSites.com, etc.).
As for specific affiliate programs, you always need to read the Terms and Conditions since there may be restrictions with regard to how sites are advertised, and even how they are redirected/tracked to the ultimate landing page. If you have any doubts or the T and C are vague on the subject, ask your affiliate manager for guidance.

Like the info but the video will not run beyond the first 4-5 minutes for me. Bummer…
From JM:
Sorry about that Mike. I’d put it on YouTube but it’s too long so I’m streaming it off my own server. Start it and then hit pause while it loads and see if that works. If anyone else has problems, send an email to cs@cyberwave.com and I’ll have my guys look into it and figure out an alternative solution.

I just got around to viewing this info. It’s a very interest concept. I didn’t understand it all but I know someone who will.I can hardly wait to share it with him.
thanks

Great content Jonathan. I’ve been using this strategy for the last couple years and it is much stronger for long term value and profit.

Affiliate Marketing pays much higher than adsense or adbrite. i signed up with Amazon affiliate program and also on some health stores.
